If you’ve recently had sex and your period is late, it is time to take a pregnancy test. We provide free and confidential medical-grade pregnancy tests.

When Should I Take A Pregnancy Test?

Whether you take a home pregnancy test or come to The Pregnancy Resource Center, experts recommend waiting until after your missed period to take a test.

If your menstrual cycle is normal (occurring every 28 to 30 days), testing a day or two after your missed period should provide accurate results. If your monthly cycle is irregular, you may want to wait five or six days afterward. By waiting, you will get a more trustworthy result.

How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?

When a woman becomes pregnant, her body begins producing a pregnancy hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The hCG hormone builds rapidly in her body, eventually entering her urine and bloodstream.

We test using urine-based pregnancy tests. If the test detects hCG in your urine, you are most likely pregnant.

Can I Take a Home Pregnancy Test?

Home pregnancy tests are reliable, but some tests are more sensitive than others. Following the instructions carefully is vital.

To hopefully avoid getting a false-negative or false-positive result, follow these steps:

  • Check the expiration date.
  • Read the instructions thoroughly before beginning the test.
  • Wait until after your missed period to test.
  • Take the test in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
  • Follow the instructions and wait the recommended amount of time before checking the results.
  • Repeat the test after a few days to confirm the results.
